The Sound of Silence
Does listening to John Cage’s piece “4’33″ work on YouTube Video? Well, not really – even silence suffers deterioration through digital compression. It’s interesting the way people save their throat-clearing until the changes in movement… in order to become part of the soundscape… plus the comedy of conductor mopping his brow.
Perhaps a little more interesting to watch (although worse sound quality) Water Walk appeared on ‘I’ve got a secret’ 1960. This piece is played for laughs, presumably Cage booked as comedian not composer.
